Abstract

This study aims to analyze students' critical thinking skills in solving mathematical story problems from the perspective of their learning independence. Critical thinking is an essential skill to master in the 21st century, and learning independence is the ability of students to actively and independently organize and manage their own learning process.This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The study was conducted at Muara Bungo Nature School in sixth grade. The research instruments included questionnaires, tests, and interviews designed to measure indicators of critical thinking skills: interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and inference.The results of this study indicate that learning independence is demonstrated by the questionnaire results, with 17 of 19 students (89%) in the high category, while only 2 students (11%) were in the medium category, and none were in the low category. However, students' critical thinking skills were still relatively low, with all 19 students having abilities ranging from 3% to 30%. This was due to students' limited ability to formulate arguments and their low initiative in answering teacher questions. This study uses Facione's critical thinking indicators, which include interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and inference. Based on interviews, teachers recognized the need for more creative and innovative learning methods to increase student interest and motivation. This research is expected to serve as a reference for the development of science, particularly in analyzing students' critical thinking skills in solving math story problems.
