Abstract

This study aims to analyze the beginning reading abilities and difficulties of grade I students in the use of multisensory model at SD Muhammadiyah Muara Bungo. The research background is based on the importance of reading skills as the main foundation in the learning process of elementary school students. The multisensory learning model was chosen because it combines various students' senses in learning activities, which is expected to improve beginning reading skills more effectively. The research method uses a qualitative approach with phenomenological type. The research subjects are grade I students at SD Muhammadiyah Muara Bungo in the academic year 2024/2025. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The research focus was directed at aspects of students' beginning reading abilities and the difficulties they face in the beginning reading learning process with the multisensory model. The research results show that the beginning reading abilities of grade I students are quite varied, ranging from fluent, moderate, accuracy to those still experiencing obstacles. The difficulty factors experienced by students include lack of concentration, limited vocabulary, and difficulty recognizing letters and words. Meanwhile, the use of the multisensory model proved to help most students improve their reading skills because it involves visual, auditory, and kinesthetic senses simultaneously. This study recommends that teachers continue to develop variations of multisensory methods in reading instruction to minimize student difficulties and improve their basic literacy skills.
